What to do after a car accident in the UK
Safety first: stop where safe, switch off the engine, use hazard lights and call 999 or 112 if anyone is injured or there is immediate danger. Do not use your phone while driving.
1. Check people and the scene
Check for injuries without putting yourself in danger. Do not admit fault or argue at the roadside. Follow police and emergency-service instructions.
2. Exchange essential details
- Names and contact details
- Vehicle registration numbers
- Insurer and policy information, when available
- Owner details if different from the driver
3. Capture proportionate evidence
Photograph vehicle positions, damage, registration plates, road layout, signs, markings, traffic controls and relevant weather or lighting conditions. Avoid photographing injured people unnecessarily.
4. Record witnesses and police reference
Ask independent witnesses for contact details. Record the police incident reference when police attend or the incident is reported.
5. Notify your insurer
Follow the timeframe and method in your policy, even if you do not intend to claim immediately. Keep originals and a copy of everything submitted.
